    Silat Anyone?

Just thought I would start another thread. Does anyone train in the art of Silat? If so which one do you train in? I have some trianing in Mande Muda Silat under the late Herman Suwanda. I alsways liked Silat and liked training it. I really like their weapon stuff and the empty hand stuff is pretty awesom as well. When I first started training in Silat I was always trying to modify the techniques to fit me. In the beginning I did not think they were practical for me. I would always justify my modifications by saying "people do not fight like that over here in the U.S.", then after I had trained in the art for a while and understood the footwork and the techniques better I realized I was doing a great injustice to the art and to the late Herman Suwanda. So now when I show Silat I show it just the way I learned it. Now I find that it is easier for me to use than before. I think this is because I have come to know my strengths and weaknesses better. Not to mention the fact that I am much older now and have a better understanding of why certain things are the way they are. Just thought I would put it out there...

    Re: Silat Anyone?

Silat, I find this art takes some time in it before the individual begins to appreciate what it brings to the table as a martial art.

There is an old saying that goes,"silat chooses you,you don't choose silat", I find this to be so very true.In my time I have seen many a folks jump into the Mande Muda style, but the demands of the training  later become to much or lead to the student moving on or giving up on the art.

The first month or so in the art I was about to give up as well, but I am so very glad that this was not my choice. It would of been a great dis-service to myself if I gave up like I wanted to do so.

The  rewards of the style do take some time to appreciate, but they are well worth the wait and then some.

    Re: Silat Anyone?

Robert, I think that is true most arts. Before I started my Jun Fan/ JKD/ FMA training I had trained in Tae Kwon Do, American Karate, and Boxing. I liked Boxing the best but I was still missing something. When I first started training in Jun Fan/FMA and saw the foot work they used and how they moved through the ranges I fell in love with the art. Now I really like Silat but I am not a "Silat guy", by that I mean I do not train primarily in Silat. Although I would like to get more training in that area. I do teach the Silat that I know and give credit as to where I got it from and I am always quick to point out that the material I am showing is Silat. I think Silat has some really really good ground fighting techniques that everyone could benefit from. I also like the stand up fight of Silat and how they tie up the arms and the brutal throws they have. Its all great stuff.

    Re: Silat Anyone?

Hey guys I just posted a really good article about Cipecut Silat Sarong on the Articles page. I copied the article from a magazine I have which is from 1998. It is talking about the history of Cipecut and how it came about. It goes into the weapons of Cipecut and how that is the whip art of Indonesia. Let me know what you think about it.

    Re: Silat Anyone?

    Salam to all,

I'm new to this site I teach Garciano Arnis "Kilat Serrada" in the Philippines.  It is the Garciano Clan's fighting art from Camotes Island, Cebu.

It is similar to the older Sri-Vishayan Bela Diri Silat styles with animal styles, bone breaking, and Ground Fighting.

I like your web-site and have always been a fan of Bruce Lee and Danny Inosanto...Is it true about the rumor that Bruce Lee was defeated by a Silat Guy, therefore beginning the Silat / JKD connection or is it just hearsay.

    Peace and God Bless.

    Re: Silat Anyone?

Hello Rohnee, as far as I know Bruce Lee never lost a fight. He did research Silat and added it to his Jeet Kune Do. I have always heard that Dan Inosanto is the one who introduced him to Silat. I will check to see what I can find out about this and post it here for everyone.

    Re: Silat Anyone?

I have heard this as well, that Bruce was studying silat before he passed away.

I wonder if anyone has the information as to what techniques in JKD are silat related, and what instructors he studied with?

Let us know what you are able to find out Tim.

    Re: Silat Anyone?

I don't know if this will add much to the discussion but...my Serak teacher, Pak Vic has told me more than once that Guro Dan saw Bruce's notes on Serak and that he studied Serak to some extent. I have not seen any Jun Fan that resembled anything I have seen in Serak so I don't know what he kept.

Be patient if any post you leave asks me to reply.
